Web Services

To go along with the list of software I like I thought it would be useful to do a similar thing with web services that I use all the time and love.  Most of these services are free although some do also have pay for “Pro” versions.

  • GMail.  This is an obvious one.  I have accounts on most of the free webmail services (Hotmail, Yahoo etc) but Gmail is the one that I started using as my main email account a few years ago.  I find it easy to use and since the advent of the Labs features it is now a really good mail client.  In fact I like it so much that I have now stopped using a mail client app altogether and do all my email online via GMail.
  • Google Reader.  Another Google product and another service that has replaced a previously loved app.  I’m something of an RSS addict and I previously used NetNewsWire as my RSS reader but since Google developed Reader I have moved totally to this as the way of feeding my habit.  It works a treat.
  • Flickr.  This is a service that I have ponied up the cash to go “Pro” on.  It is the ultimate photo sharing site.  I have previously used the Gallery web based system on my own site but nowadays only use Flickr.  Not only is the site easy to use but there are various uploader apps available that allow photos to be uploaded directly from the computer.
  • DropBox.  Dropbox isn’t a unique service but it’s the one I use when I want to have online file storage.  It links very well to either OS X and Windows and creates a sync’d collection of files within the Filer/Explorer.  The free version gives 2Gb of storage and although there is a pay for version offering more storage I haven’t yet had the need.
  • Evernote.  Not sure if this should be classed as an online service or not as there are both OS X and Windows clients.  Evernote is a superb way of creating, managing and sorting notes.  Notes can be text, pictures, saved web pages – in fact pretty much anything.  Notes are held on the web and sync’d to the client on whatever platform you may be using.
