Podcasts

I’m a big fan of podcasts, especially the video variety. In fact I tend to watch them more than I do actual tv, subscribing in iTunes and having them synched to my AppleTV, often in HD. Here are some of my favourites.

  • GeekBrief.tv.  GeekBrief is a dailyish podcast about all things gadget.  It is hosted by the lovely Cali Lewis and has the tag line of shiny happy tech news which pretty much sums up the show.  A combination of reviews and heads up on forthcoming gadgets this is the show to watch if you want to know what’s cool.
  • Diggnation.  With Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose Diggnation covers some of the hottest stories on the social news website digg.com (that’s D I double G dot com).  OK so that’s the opening line of the show but it pretty much sums it up.  Well that and the hosts getting drunk while covering a range of funny or provocative stories from the site.  Regular contributions from Prager and Hippy Glen add to the mix.  Quality.
  • Loaded.  Loaded usually airs four days per week and covers tech news in bite sized chunks.  It’s hosted by the fabulous Natali Del Conte who originally hosted her own produced show, TeXtra which had a very similar format.  Loaded is part of the CNET TV brand and Natali appears on a number of other podcasts of theirs as well as on parent company CBS.
  • Car Pool.  This is unique.  It is hosted by Bobby Llewellyn, best known as Kryten in Red Dwarf and host of Scrapheap Challenge when it was good, and is a self produced project.  The concept is simple, Bobby give famous person a lift in his car and interviews them.  The format seems to make the interviewee relax and results in good interviews.
  • Totally Rad Show.  Another show hosted by Alex Albrecht, this time teamed with his real life buddies Jeff Cannata and Dan Trachtenberg.  The show has various sections such as Movies, TV, Video Games and the guys review a couple of new releases in each section.  The show also has occasional slots such as Dan Becomes a Man and the yearly competition to predict the top grossing movies of the year and the Oscar winners.
  • COOP.  This show is a video game review show and has to be my favourite of that genre.  The reviews are in the form of conversations between the hosts and often their friends and set against the backdrop of San Fransico.  They also have the most entertaining sponsor slots of any show on the Revision 3 network.
  • Tekzilla.  Tekzilla is probably best described as a general technology show.  There are two versions, the weekly show has a mix of tech from TV and audio equipment to notebooks, netbooks and desktop PCs to, well pretty much anything.  There are also viewer questions that the show hosts Patrick Norton and Veronica Belmont try to answer.  There is also a daily version of the show which is a short hint or tip to make life easier, usually hosted by Veronica.
  • Hak5.  This is a great show for geeks.  It covers, often in some depth, various subjects relating to hacking, both from a black hat and white hat standpoint.  Demonstrations of techiques such as ARP cache poisoning and using rainbow tables to brute force password are detailed and easy to follow.  They even have man-in-the-middle hardware for wireless (the pineapple) and wired (the teddy) networks.  In addition to software based techniques they also demonstrate hardware hacks.
  • TED Talks.  I’ve blogged on these before.  The TED conferences that take place all around the globe invite some fascinating speakers to come on stage for a limited time to discuss topics close to their heart.  The subject matter is eclectic but nearly always interesting.  Worth anyone’s time.
  • NASA Hidden Universe.  NASA does some great podcasts.  This one has images taken from the Spitzer Space Telescope often with really interesting commentary on what we are seeing.
