I have to confess that I have an irrational hatred of the Arial typeface. I have no explanation for this,I just find it intensely annoying. It could be because for years it was the default in Microsoft Word and so a) it was one that was seen most often and b) it struck me as slightly lazy to go with the default when there were so many others to choose from.
But how to choose? Well now there is flippingtypical.com a website that uses scans the fonts on your machine and then renders a line of text in each of them. You can change the text that is being displayed if you want to see the best selection for a particular word or combination, good for choosing a font for a heading or banner. Ctrl-B for bold and Ctrl-I for italics allows you to see those combinations as well. Very neat.
